While his HBO counterpart John Oliver issued an urgent warning about the GOP vote in the midterms, Bill Maher spent the majority of his time preparing for the critical election dining with Trump at the White House (and then publicly bickering with him), conducting an embarrassing softball interview with former Trump press secretary Karoline Leavitt, and presenting Kid Rock’s racist rants against Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed.
So, in the wake of a blue tsunami that saw Democrats regain control of Congress in surprisingly dominant fashion, the increasingly illiberal pundit devoted Friday night’s episode of “Real Time” to “rejoicing” in the Democrats’ big night — and making a few gay jokes.
“The Republicans lost a lot. There’s no other way to say it. And that’s awesome! Now I’ll never get that $5,000 check,” Maher joked, adding, “In 2016, Lindsey Graham said, ‘If we nominate Trump, we’ll be destroyed…and we’ll deserve it,’ and that just goes to show that gays are still ten years ahead of everyone else.” (Graham, a Republican senator from South Carolina, died in July.)
He wasn’t finished. “Well, look, I hate to gloat, but sorry, I have to do it a little bit because everyone was worrying about this election,” Maher said, before pointing to a series of clips of himself on “Real Time” and various cable news programs predicting that Democrats would deliver a “historic blow” to Republicans in the midterms.
“Here’s something I couldn’t have predicted: Trump’s reaction to the election. He said, ‘Congratulations to the Democrats, they did a good job,'” Maher offered, before looking directly into the camera and addressing his training partner: “Donnie, are you okay? I know we’re arguing. You don’t look good. You’re not even going to do it. fake Was it fake?
