World of Warcraft is the game that absolutely refuses to die, and in fact, it’s potentially bigger than ever.
Confirmed today on the official Warcraft social channels, Blizzard said that World of Warcraft Forever represents its largest launch in history by peak players, even beating Wrath of the Lich King since its previous WoW peak nearly two decades ago.
“Congratulations, you have made HISTORY!” the message says, “WoW: Forever achieved the largest launch in WoW history in terms of maximum concurrent players”, and also confirmed that it also had “the largest number of returning WoW players in history”.
Congratulations everyone, you have made HISTORY! WoW: Forever achieved: 🔹The biggest launch in WoW history in terms of maximum concurrent players 🔹The largest number of returning players in WoW history This is all thanks to you, the players. From all of us, THANK YOU! https://t.co/MQxQXmNDbANovember 7, 2026
For those who don’t know, World of Warcraft is an MMORPG in which thousands of players crowd onto single servers to create a living, persistent online world. Microsoft and Xbox acquired the game a few years ago along with Activision, Blizzard and King, and it has been porting World of Warcraft to Xbox consoles for some time now. The game is currently only available on PC and cloud streaming services like NVIDIA GeForce Now.
The retail version of World of Warcraft has strayed significantly from the game’s original vision in recent years, leading players to leave the game and potentially even the genre. in mass. World of Warcraft Forever is essentially a remix and tweak of the original vision of World of Warcraft, with minimal handling, an increased sense of risk and reward, a reduction in “convenient” features that reduce in-game social interaction, in addition to an improvement in visual quality. WoW:F also features thousands of new quests and stories, set in a sort of “alternate timeline” that exists roughly a year before the original World of Warcraft base game.
It remains to be seen if WoW:F can maintain the momentum it’s been seeing, but this whole ordeal leaves the main arm of World of Warcraft, currently nicknamed Midnight, with a bit of a headache in my opinion.
The only game that could kill WoW was, in fact, WoW itself

Many games have tried to kill World of Warcraft over the years, but none have really succeeded. WoW and Final Fantasy 14 remain the only major subscription-based MMORPGs, at least in the West at the time of writing, with incumbents relying on free-to-play business models to attract players.
World of Warcraft’s subscription model ensures that it can release huge amounts of content at a rapid pace, although in recent years many have questioned whether this has become too fast. World of Warcraft’s main “retail” arm has seen a huge drop in quality, with players asking the company to slow down to focus on detail and polish. So far, Blizzard has ignored these calls.
WoW:F represents a complete reversal of what WoW retail has essentially become. World of Warcraft retail has abandoned all forms of immersion, friction, world-building, and outdoor leveling gameplay to focus on arcade-style end-game content that, while still fun, is frankly quite exhausting. World of Warcraft’s story writing has been dismal for years, and bugs are more prevalent than ever.

The WoW:F team exists separately from the WoW:Retail team, and the differences in philosophy are stark. WoW:F’s emphasis on social systems, in-game immersion, low-key, environmental storytelling, and slower, more methodical gameplay seems much more in line with what lapsed WoW players actually want.
I think World of Warcraft’s retail arm focused on “data telemetry” rather than good human design instincts, which led to the hollowing out of the game. Hopefully World of Warcraft: Forever can teach Blizzard a hard lesson about listening directly to players – something I think the retail team doesn’t do anymore.
