CINCINNATI —
The family of former University of Cincinnati coach Bob Huggins says he lives with a progressive cognitive illness that has begun to affect his memory and daily life.
His family shared the health update days before Huggins was officially inducted into the University of Cincinnati’s James P. Kelly Athletic Hall of Fame.
The induction is scheduled to take place Oct. 23, the day before Cincinnati’s homecoming football game against Texas Tech.
“Bob is living with a progressive cognitive illness that has begun to affect his memory and aspects of his daily life. Although the family has chosen to keep this matter private over the past several months, they feel this is an appropriate time to share the news with the many people who have supported Bob throughout his remarkable career, especially as he prepares to be honored with induction into the University of Cincinnati James P. Kelly Sports Hall of Fame,” a statement read.
Huggins is the winningest head coach in Cincinnati basketball history, leading UC to 14 NCAA tournaments during his 16 years at Clifton.
A 2022 inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Huggins led UC to 399 victories from 1989 to 2005. The Bearcats made the 1992 Final Four under Huggins, kicking off a streak of 14 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.
Huggins’ 399 wins with UC were the most at any stage of his career, including more than his 16 years at West Virginia (345 wins).
“Bob is deeply grateful for the tremendous honor bestowed upon him by the University of Cincinnati. His years leading the Bearcats represent an unforgettable chapter of his life, filled with treasured relationships, remarkable accomplishments and memories that will always hold a special place in his heart. He looks forward to returning to Cincinnati this weekend, celebrating with former players and friends, and sharing a moment that recognizes not only his accomplishments, but also the lasting bonds formed along the way,” said a joint statement from the family and university read.
The Huggins family said that while they recognize the challenges ahead, they remain focused on the relationships, experiences and moments that bring them joy.
“He continues to be surrounded by the unwavering love and support of his wife, June, his daughters, Jenna and Jacqueline, and his entire family,” a statement read.
The university has also provided support to the family as they deal with the diagnosis.
“Cincinnati Athletics is thrilled to welcome Coach Bob Huggins and his family to campus this weekend for his induction into the James P. Kelly Athletics Hall of Fame.
