49ers tight end George Kittle was right, sort of. Receiver Brandon Aiyuk won’t do it »Go up» The team made it easier on Friday because it doesn’t try to do it.
According to agent Drew Rosenhaus, Friday’s meeting will take place at the team’s business offices and not the team’s practice facility.
This makes the session less of a formal presentation of Aiyuk, hoping to force the team’s hand. As explained earlier today, the NFL has still not been reinstated Aiyuk from the reserve/left squad list – even though Rosenhaus filed the request on October 27.
Rather, it is a meeting presumably aimed at negotiating a solution to the situation.
The 49ers argued to reporters Thursday night that Aiyuk’s return to the NFL is tied to the $13 million the team believes it owes in signing bonuses already paid. This should not be part of the analysis of whether he is reinstated by the league, whether the 49ers put him back on the roster, and/or whether the 49ers cut him.
But they’re making it an issue because they can tie his ability to play to his willingness to transfer the controversial funds to the team.
So that’s what’s happening. The brakes have already been applied to what should have been an administrative and automatic process. The league and the 49ers are working together to help the team get Aiyuk’s money back before Aiyuk is allowed back into the league.
Then there is the fact that a an active arrest warrant is pending for Aiyuk, following a speeding violation. The work meeting could potentially be disrupted by an attempt to enforce a specific point of police business.
