Bolsonaro leaves Brazil after losing the presidential election: what you need to know

The Supreme Court had ordered Bolsonaro to surrender his passports to prevent him from leaving the country. The senator is the subject of several corruption investigations.

Bolsonaro said that he had received the Supreme Court order outside the home where his father, Jair Bolsonaro is under house arrest.

He said Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes issued the order, the same judge who sentenced his father to prison.

The senator said in an Instagram post Monday that he had planned to surrender his passports, but reports Tuesday indicated the passports were canceled after the deadline to return them.

Bolsonaro lost the runoff election on Sunday after an incredibly close count throughout the evening, until Lula took the lead.

The outgoing left-wing president ultimately won with a clear margin of more than 4 million votes.

Bolsonaro said he would seek to overturn election resultshighlighting the extension of evening voting beyond the scheduled closing time of 5 p.m. nationwide.

Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party recognized the results on Tuesday, but the senator has yet to acknowledge victory.

His refusal to accept the results mirrors the way his father Jair challenged his electoral defeat to Lula four years ago.

Jair is serving a sentence of more than 20 years in prison for plotting a coup to overthrow Lula after the 2022 elections.

How did Bolsonaro leave Brazil?

Argentina’s Migration Department said Wednesday that Flavio Bolsonaro and his family briefly entered Argentina before taking a private plane to Ecuador.

The department added that Bolsonaro and his family entered the country through the Tancredo Neves international border bridge in Misiones province.

He also said they held valid travel documents and there were “no legal obstacles” blocking their entry, despite a court order barring Bolsonaro from leaving Brazil.

The Argentinian media Infobae reported earlier Tuesday that Bolsonaro had crossed the border into Argentina to board a plane bound for the United States.

Bolsonaro’s exact whereabouts are unclear, with some reports claiming he had landed in the United States, while others claimed he was in Ecuador or still on his way.

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he would “approve” of the far-right senator’s visit to the United States.

“I think they’re good people. It was a very strange election, and I thought it was terrible,” Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews.

Trump also reiterated his belief that Flavio’s father, Jair, was the victim of persecution at the hands of Brazilian judicial authorities.

“The father was treated very poorly. I thought, but I wasn’t involved,” Trump added. “It’s Brazil. It’s a different country.”

Flavio’s brother, Eduardo Bolsonaro, said on a podcast last week that his brother would have to leave the country if he lost the election.

Eduardo, who lives in the United States, was convicted in absentia in June of illegal lobbying of the Trump administration. He was sentenced to four years in prison and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

What are the investigations against Flavio Bolsonaro about?

The senator was accused of laundering money through a sports betting company, money from seniors’ government pensions.

A second investigation focuses on Bolsonaro’s ties to a disgraced banker from whom he allegedly accepted millions of dollars to finance the biopic about his father, titled “Dark Horse.”

Bolsonaro will lose his immunity from prosecution when his senatorial term ends in February 2027. He has denied wrongdoing in both cases.
