Brobbey wins Colwill battle – player ratings for Sunderland vs Chelsea

Mike Penders: There was talk of the return of number one Emiliano Martinez, but the young number two kept his place. The Belgian was sent the wrong way for the penalty and could do little to prevent the goal, but produced a superb save from Isador to keep the score at 1-0. 6

Marco Palestre: Having suffered injury setbacks and still appearing to adapt to the championship, the young Italian put in a positive offensive display and could have secured an assist with a cross midway through the first half. 6

Wesley Fofana: A stable performance after a fragile performance last week at home against Manchester United. 6

Levi Colwill: Had a difficult afternoon and failed to cope with Brian Brobbey, who caught him for a chance midway through the half before winning the penalty. Although it seemed like a difficult decision, Colwill could have handled the situation better. He was then sent off at half-time after also being booked. 4

Pep Chavarria: An excellent early counter prevented what looked like an almost certain goal. He also delivered a dangerous cross, but no one attacked him. 6

Moses Caicedo: Largely anonymous in midfield before becoming a makeshift central defender in the second half. 5

Romeo Lavia: Functioned as a deep-lying playmaker but saw a long-range effort fail to trouble the goalkeeper. 6

Jordan Henderson: Back in the starting lineup in a decent but unremarkable performance at his former club. 5

Cole Palmer: Palmer’s brilliant first touch and strike into the penalty area could have won a penalty when he was brought down by Luke O’Nien, but the incident was ruled to have taken place outside the area. 6

Morgane Rogers: Headed a good opportunity midway through the first half and was largely peripheral. 5

Pedro Neto: Neto was ineffective up front and took off in the 62nd minute. 5

Submarines:

Estevao Willian (on 46, Colwill): The Brazilian appeared threatening after coming into play. 6

Danny Welbeck (on 62, Neto): Additional presence in the area, highlighted by a glancing header that moves away moments after entering. 6

Malo Gusto (at 62, Palestre): A quiet display on his 100th Premier League appearance. 6

Geovany Quenda (at 79, Chavarria)

Emegha (out of 87, Henderson)

Unused subs: Sharman-Lowe, Anselmino, Nicoll-Jazuli, Barco
