Broncos OC Davis Webb: ‘Not ideal’ to lose playcalling role, eager to see how we respond

Broncos offensive coordinator Davis Webb’s job description underwent a drastic change this week.

Webb took over as the team’s offensive playmaker during the offseason, but head coach Sean Payton took over that role after the unit’s slow play through the first four weeks of the season. During a press conference Friday, Webb was asked if he thought four games was long enough to make the decision to stick with the status quo.

“Fortunately, it’s not my jobthat’s (Payton’s) job,” Webb said, via Parker Gabriel of Denver Post. “Obviously, I think he’s answered that. I think about his whole world and how we’ve done it. Really owned by our players. It’s not ideal, but at the same time, it’s exciting because we’re 2-2 through the first four games. Our first four opponents were a combined 13-3 to start the season. Welcome to the league.”

Webb said he knows Payton is “looking forward” to calling games again and said he is “excited to see how our team responds” to the change, even though he is disappointed with how things have gone so far.

“Every time it happens in all aspects of your life, professionally, it’s a little bit, but, in the same breath, it’s the NFL. “There you go,” Webb said. “I’ve been a backup QB, I’ve been up and down before, that’s kind of how it goes.”

Webb noted he still has an important role in weekly operations and game plan discussions, but calling games represented a significant change in his responsibilities. It’s hard to put a positive spin on this from an individual standpoint, but improving the game for the Broncos is Payton’s main goal.
