Geely Auto Group will begin selling its vehicles in Canada in a few months. Well, next year, but it’s the same thing, and it seems more dramatic.
In March 2026, Canada opened its borders to Chinese electric vehicles, announcing a first-come, first-served import quota of 49,000 vehicles. Canada also lowered its tariff rate on Chinese electric vehicles from 16.1% to 6.1%, breaking away from the United States and moving towards China. This left the US government rather salty, and it announced a small 50% tariff on vehicles imported from Canada.

Meanwhile, American citizens are just plain jealous. It’s not like we’ll get cheap Chinese EVs anytime soon. We’re stuck with the Ford Fathom. And things are about to get even harder to watch as Geely throws its hat into the ring.
Geely’s long-term commitment to Canada
We don’t have exact dates, but Geely plans to sell its vehicles in Canada next year. Geely has also not announced which cars it will sell in Canada. We also don’t know what price they will sell for.
There were some clues along the way, however. Geely has been recruiting and building a corporate team in Canada since the start of the year, both for Geely itself and its luxury division, Zeekr. We can reasonably assume that they plan to offer a wide range of options for the Canadian market. This could include everything from the Geely EX5 electric SUV to the Zeekr 001 high-performance luxury electric shooting brake.

“We are entering this market with a long-term commitment, bringing our global technology and engineering capabilities to Canadian drivers while building strong local partnerships and the support customers need to choose Geely with confidence,” said Bryan Wu, General Manager of Geely Auto Canada.
Geely is the first major Chinese automaker to announce its plans for Canada, but others will likely follow. Geely will have to compete with brands like BYD, Chery and Dongfeng. Geely already co-owns brands such as Volvo, Polestar and Lotus, available in Canada. That means Canada could get Polestar’s cool new electric vehicles.
