Canadian rescued from Adirondacks after staying in same place for 7 hours

KEENE, N.Y. (WCAX) – A 60-year-old Canadian man was rescued from the Adirondack Mountains after staying in one place for seven hours, park rangers said.

The rescue took place on Wednesday, October 21 on the Mount Colden Trap sea wall.

Rangers said the man sent a satellite beacon around 6:30 p.m. after losing his crampons on an icy ledge. This loss left him stranded.

Forest guards reached the man around 1 a.m. and began rescue work.

“When I contacted him and I was just trying to secure him, the thought came to my mind: If we both slip before I tie him up and attach him to my tether, he’s dead. He’s as good as gone,” said Ranger Jenna Curcio.

Rangers said the Trap Dike route is a fourth-class climb and has claimed several lives over the years.

Rangers encourage hikers to do their research and prepare.
