Third-party gaming giant Capcom recently suffered a major data breach, exposing the personal information of more than 11.7 million “CAPCOM ID” customer accounts worldwide.
The data leak includes emails, customer IP addresses used during last login, and other details such as account creation dates. Apparently, only “43 cases” disclosed additional details such as dates of birth, gender, country/region and nicknames.
Capcom says 196 Capcom ID “account login passwords” have also been changed, but the passwords for these accounts have already been reset by the company and it continues to investigate the “extent of any impact.”
In the same notice on the official website, Capcom states that it will contact affected customers over time. It also notes that credit card information is not included in the data breach.
Capcom: “Thank you very much for your continued use of CAPCOM ID.
We recently discovered that our systems were subject to unauthorized access by a third party, which compromised some of our customers’ personal information.
We deeply apologize for the significant inconvenience and concern this has caused our customers and everyone involved.
For more details, please refer to the official announcement found on our website.
https://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/news/html/e261022.htmlWe will continue to conduct a thorough investigation, implement preventative measures based on the causes identified, and work to further strengthen our information security framework.
Once again, we would like to sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and concern this has caused.
Capcom ID is a unified account system that allows players to manage various Capcom games and access certain features. If you play titles like Street Fighter 6, it lets you access features like online play, cross-play, and even bonuses.
So if you have a Capcom ID, now might be a good time to update your password and any other details.
