Card collector who spent more than two years building $100,000 collection receives terrible news from PSA

The explosion of card collecting, from Pokémon to basketball cards, has led people to pay extra to have their collections graded by official third parties like PSA. Usually, the worst thing a customer can hear from a credit rating agency is that their valuable card isn’t in the mint condition they thought it would be. But for Sky-B, a recent email from PSA contained much worse news.

PSA reportedly sent him a message recently (via IGN) to inform him that a FedEX truck leaving its Southern California facilities was burglarized and that his order was among those impacted by the theft. “We understand how upsetting this news must be,” the email read. “Although your items were not in our possession at the time of the burglary, we take our role in securing your items seriously and will work with you to resolve this situation as best we can.”

According to Sky-B, the collection he submitted to PSA for appraisal was worth $100,000. He posted a YouTube video discussing the incident and going over some of the most valuable cards in the collection and what he thought they should be worth. One was a Tyrese Maxey with a projected PSA 10 value of $1,911. Another was a Caleb Williams PSA 10 worth about $1,500. He said he spent $8,000 just to get all his cards graded, keeping the collection up to $156,000.

“We will compensate you for the affected items in your order in accordance with our terms and conditions, which are based on fair market value up to the Maximum Insured Value (“MIV”) you select for each item,” PSA wrote in its email. The company said it will contact again soon to begin this process, while also engaging local law enforcement to see if the products can be recovered.

Other collectors also began to appear, suggesting that their rare cards were part of the heist. “A Fedex truck was broken into and my Smaug the Magnificent was stolen!” » wrote one person on Reddit. A PSA 10 Zoro One Piece card was also reportedly stolen, leading some to speculate that the total value of the haul could exceed $1 million.

A PSA representative shared the following statement with Kotaku:

We are aware of a theft involving a third party shipping vehicle transporting PSA classified items. We are working closely with law enforcement and the carrier as the investigation continues.

We’ve disabled certificates for stolen items and notified Marketplace partners so they can search for rare and serialized items. Our customer service team has contacted affected customers directly and is arranging compensation based on fair market value.

We understand the impact this has on affected collectors, many of whom view these cards as much more than a financial asset. Our team is focused on supporting them. We take this incident seriously and will continue to work with law enforcement to hold those responsible accountable.

Sky-B told its subscribers that it was concerned that the rating agency was trying to downgrade it since it did not charge it the full commission for rating certain cards. Some other collectors would also have been affected. It’s unclear what the total value of the cards stolen from the FedEx truck is, but it’s every collector’s worst nightmare: sending a valuable collection only to lose or destroy it while they wait.

“Honestly, that’s what hurts the most, aside from obviously being absolutely destroyed financially here,” Sky-B said. “I have not currently paid all the money it cost to acquire these cards, I have not paid all the PSA grading fees, and I have not and probably never will see any of these cards in person.”
