Cardinals promote Rob Cerfolio to general manager

9:40 a.m.: The Cardinals officially announced Cerfolio’s promotion.

8:40 a.m.: The Cardinals are promoting assistant general manager Rob Cerfolio to general manager, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. He will serve as the No. 2 executive under President of Baseball Operations Chaim Bloom.

Cerfolio, 34, joined the Cardinals two offseasons ago. He was previously the Guardians Director of Player Development and was given the title of AGM with a focus on player development and performance. He has held this role for two seasons and is now moving up the ranks.

It may not be a coincidence that Cerfolio receives this title bump (and likely a pay raise) after his name surfaced as a candidate in the Athletics general manager search. He is one of several well-known candidates who were interviewed, joining Brewers assistant general manager Matt Kleine and, of course, Red Sox assistant general manager Taylor Smith, who ultimately landed the title of president of baseball operations with the A’s. Cerfolio’s promotion to general manager in St. Louis means that to be hired by another organization in the future, he will likely have to be offered the title of president of baseball operations for a new team himself.

Meanwhile, St. Louis lost one of its top leaders – fellow assistant general manager/director of recruiting Randy Flores – who was named general manager of the Astros last week (after Kleine turned down an offer to Houston and opted to stay in Milwaukee). Cerfolio and Flores were two of the Cardinals’ three assistant general managers, alongside Moisés Rodríguez. Cerfolio’s promotion helps maintain some continuity at a time when the Cardinals’ baseball operations leadership is attracting interest from other teams. It shouldn’t be a surprise if they promote another internal leader to an AGM role or bring in someone from outside the organization in the wake of Flores’ departure.

Presumably, the promotion comes with a new contract for Cerfolio. Time will tell if the Cardinals will release details, but Bloom’s contract as president of baseball operations covers the 2026-30 seasons, so one would imagine Cerfolio will look at a similar timeline as this pair attempts to oversee a transition/rebuild period for the Cardinals.
