“Carrie” renewed for season 2 on Prime Video

The first season of Carrie on Prime Video told the story of Stephen King’s first novel, albeit updated to the present day. But the show doesn’t end there.

Prime Video has renewed Carrie for a second season and will continue to follow Carrie White (Summer H. Howell) after the fateful events of prom. The recovery is quite rapid, coming two weeks after the premiere of the first season, on October 7. Prime Video says the series was No. 1 on the Amazon-owned streamer in more than 100 territories in its first two weeks.

Mike Flanagan, who adapted King’s novel, will remain showrunner and executive producer for the second season. King also serves as executive producer.

“Carrie connects with both longtime Stephen King fans and a new generation at large, including young adults and international audiences, with particular strength among female viewers,” said Peter Friedlander, head of global television at Amazon MGM Studios. “It speaks to the enduring power of this story and signals that Mike Flanagan’s reimagining of the iconic intellectual property has real scale. We’re excited about the direction he and Stephen plan to take the story.

The first season follows sheltered Carrie as she enters public high school after the death of her father, but always under the extremely watchful eye of her mother (Samantha Sloyan). “Carrie is forced to deal with a viral bullying scandal that tears her community apart, the relentless pressure and casual cruelty of the social media age, and the awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers that arise alongside her adolescence,” the logline reads.

“For 50 years, audiences have known and cared about Carrie White’s story. From the beginning, we envisioned a story that went far beyond prom, and I am incredibly grateful for Stephen’s trust and support in exploring what comes next,” Flanagan said.

King added, “I can’t wait for audiences to see what’s in store for Carrie White. Mike Flanagan and I are excited about what’s next. It’s sure to be exciting.”

The season one cast also includes Siena Agudong, Alison Thornton, Joel Oulette, Josie Totah, Arthur Conti, Thalia Dudek, Amber Midthunder and Matthew Lillard. Kate Siegel, Michael Trucco, Crystal Balint, Rahul Kohli, Tim Bagley and Heather Graham had recurring roles

Flanagan directed four of the first season’s eight episodes. Siegel, Axelle Carolyn, Kyra Sedgwick and Hiromi Kamata also directed.
