Anthropic has more cash than almost any American company.
The nearly 6-year-old artificial intelligence lab revealed in an S-1 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday that it had $112.4 billion in cash, plus an additional $19.3 billion in short-term investments, as of June 30.
Anthropic’s total of $131.7 billion exceeds that of all non-bank U.S. companies except Berkshire Hathaway And Alphabetaccording to data compiled by CNBC and S&P Capital IQ.
At mid-year, Anthropic had more cash than Amazon, EspaceX, Meta And Microsoft. There were more than Nvidia And Apple combined.
Depending on how much the company raises in its IPO – and reports suggest it could exceed $100 billion – Anthropic could grow its treasury to more than $230 billion in cash.
So far, Anthropic has not shared specific details about the size of its offering, and said in the filing that existing investors would also sell into the IPO, meaning the company itself would not raise all of the funds. These details are expected to be released in approximately two weeks.
Never before has a company gone public with this amount of cash.
Anthropic’s trove highlights the fundraising prowess that has allowed it to amass a total of $141 billion in private funding in just six years since its founding. However, since the company’s future computing power commitments have not yet reached its expenses, Anthropic will need to continue accumulating cash by raising funds or generating profits to meet its obligations.
Anthropic’s first-half compute and infrastructure spending was $8.95 billion. But the company said it typically purchases computing power 12 to 18 months in advance and only recognizes expenses when that capacity becomes available. This means that the first half spending figure does not reflect the scale of its future obligations.
As of June 30, Anthropic disclosed $321.4 billion in undiscounted future lease obligations and $265.6 billion in minimum fixed or guaranteed future commitments, or more than half a trillion in total. These will begin in the coming years, for durations ranging from one year to 20 years.
Additionally, the company said that after June 30, it entered into new and amended agreements with a minimum future payment obligation of approximately $245 billion.
The company has not yet shared the total amount of its updated commitments.
If Anthropic’s money is king, calculation is its greatest claim on the crown.
