Coast Guard stops cruise ship in Miami, officials say

The MSC Poetry cruise ship is currently being held with passengers on board at the Port of Miami and its route is suspended while the Coast Guard inspects the vessel, Coast Guard officials told CBS News.

In a statement to CBS News on Monday, the Coast Guard said its teams were “verifying the cruise ship’s compliance with international standards and U.S. regulations.” The Coast Guard’s Miami Sector stopped the vessel for inspection Sunday.

“The Coast Guard is responsible for verifying the safety of commerce. The harbor master’s priority is to ensure the safety of passengers, crew, the vessel and the environment,” the Coast Guard said.

In a statement to CBS News, MSC Cruises wrote: “The departure of MSC Poesia has been delayed while the U.S. Coast Guard conducts an inspection on board the vessel while it is docked in port.”

“We are fully cooperating with the authorities as they complete their inspection. As this process is ongoing, we are unable to provide further information at this time,” the company said. “We are keeping guests informed of updates regarding the ship’s planned departure and appreciate their patience and understanding.”

MSC Cruises says the MSC Poesia has a capacity for more than 3,200 passengers and more than 1,000 crew, although it’s unclear how many people are currently on board.
