Commanders not expected to fire HC Dan Quinn

Dan Quinn‘s name was mentioned in discussions surrounding in-season layoffs before yesterday’s Commanders-Giants tie. His job security naturally became even more of a talking point given how this match ended.

Washington gave up a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter to set up overtime. In the additional framework, the Commanders benefited from a Cam Skattebo fumble and found themselves in position to attempt a game-winning field goal. A puzzling final play resulted in the quarterback Jayden Daniels However, he was tackled inbounds and time expired as the team had no timeouts left.

Following yesterday’s events, Quinn once again finds herself at the center of speculation about her future. However, no layoffs appear imminent at this time. Josina Anderson of The Exhibit reports that there is no feeling around the league that Quinn will be replaced in the immediate future. Mark Maske of Front Office Sports adds that it “seems unlikely” that an in-season change will happen at this point. By the end of the campaign, at a minimum, Quinn’s professional status will undoubtedly remain a central talking point.

In 2024, Quinn arrived for his second NFL head coaching job after a successful final season leading the Cowboys defense. Washington made a surprising run to the NFC title game during Daniels’ rookie campaign, building expectations for a strong follow-up season. Last year, however, things didn’t go as planned as Daniels missed time and the Commanders finished 5-12. Several changes were made to Quinn’s staff, including replacing the offensive coordinator. Kingsbury Cliff and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt.

Before the current season, it became clear that Quinn’s status would be tied to his ability to guide the Commanders to a turnaround. Daniels is back in the fold following another dislocated elbow, but Sunday’s wild finish left Washington with a 1-3-1 record. While there’s plenty of room for improvement in the NFC East, things certainly haven’t gone as planned so far in 2026.

No coaching changes have been made yet this season. At least a few head coach/coordinator layoffs can nonetheless be expected across the NFL as the campaign unfolds, and the focus in Washington’s case will undoubtedly continue to focus on Quinn’s ability to replenish his stock over the coming weeks.
