CoreWeaveCredit tensions continued to increase on Thursday, against a backdrop of massive sales of AI-related securities.

CoreWeave – a so-called neocloud company – has taken on more than $51 billion in debt and bonds to finance the buildout of its AI infrastructure. The country now faces a rebellion from stock and bond investors as concerns grow over AI’s overspending and debt levels.

Yields on CoreWeave debt continued to climb, with the yield to maturity on its 9.75% bond due in 2031 reaching 15.78%. Bond yields move inversely to prices. Meanwhile, the spread on its five-year credit default swaps, which provide insurance against default, at one point climbed above 1,140 basis points. It last stood at nearly 1,038 basis points, a 16% jump week over week and 164% higher than a year ago.

Credit problems are also spreading to AI stocks. CoreWeave stock fell on Thursday before recovering and closing up 5.94%. This decision follows Wednesday’s 15.5% fall.

Other neocloud stocks were under similar pressure. Nebius also sank before climbing to close at 1.29% and and Irene ultimately ended the day down less than 1%.

Concern over AI overspending is also spreading. For example, the actions of Micron technology And Advanced microdevices sold following a sharp sell-off in South Korean chip stocks. Micron closed up 1.87%, while AMD fell 1.5%.

As concerns over AI debt steadily rise, investors have suddenly become nervous about the underlying finances of companies that borrow heavily to buy chips, build data centers and lease computing power.

Coreweave’s credit default swaps are an example of this stress.

Credit default swaps are contracts in which buyers pay to protect themselves in case the borrower cannot repay their debt. CoreWeave’s widening CDS spreads mean investors view the debt as riskier.

The market is “essentially saying ‘no mas’ to AI debt without operating cash flow support,” Evercore trading desk ISI said.

A spread level of 1,000 basis points or more is generally a sign of credit difficulties, said Gavan Nolan, executive director of fixed income pricing at S&P Global Market Intelligence.

No one questions whether the demand for CoreWeave’s services is real, since the company has contracts with all the major hyperscalers, Nolan said. The question is whether the cash flow will eventually arrive.

“It’s obviously very negative free cash flow at the moment, and he needs that cash flow to really come in to justify all the investments he’s spending,” Nolan said.

“Self-fulfilling prophecy”

CEO Mike Intrator dismissed the market moves Wednesday, according to a memo obtained by CNBC.

“When you build a new type of technology company, there will be periods when the market misunderstands and acts irrationally,” he writes. “We are confident in our order book, which more than supports all our debts.”

The order book stands at more than $100 billion, approximately two-thirds of which is with investment-grade counterparties, including Microsoft, Meta, IBM And CaterpillarDeutsche Bank said in a note on Thursday. The company reiterated its buy rating on the stock on Wednesday, calling the dislocation a buying opportunity.

“The problem is that this kind of concern may turn out to be a self-fulfilling prophecy and risks triggering broader problems in other AI-related names,” said Jim Reid, global head of macro and thematic research.

Domino effects may already be occurring. OracleThe five-year CDS spread also increased this week. It last stood at 282 basis points, an increase of about 10% in a week.

“A downgrade to its BBB rating would risk pushing IG-only investors into forced sales,” Reid said.
