“Saturday Night Live” alum Dana Carvey didn’t get all the controversy surrounding Shane Gillis’ recent monologue on the sketch show, saying he “just saw it” as “a joke.”
Gillis sparked outrage on Oct. 10 when he opened his stint as host of “SNL” by mocking women at the gym. “I haven’t been to the gym in so long, I didn’t know women dress like whores now?” » said Gillis. “Have you seen the shorts? They’re these neon colored, artificial bait type shorts, and the wrinkles go around the cheeks and all combine at the asshole. And don’t look! You’re not allowed to look.”
Speaking about the backlash on his podcast “Fly on the Wall” with David Spade, Carvey said: “I just didn’t understand the brouhaha only because, to me, I just saw it as what we call – I’m just going to say it – a joke. »
He continued, “When you tell jokes, you’re not literally saying that women are whores. You’re literally joking. Isn’t that kind of idea? No? Did I just get canceled?”
Carvey, who performed on “SNL” for seven seasons from 1986 to 1993, added that Gillis’ joke probably “destroyed” the “10 comedy clubs he performed at that week” but acknowledged that “SNL” may have been “not the right place.”
Spade chimed in and said, “Look, that got a laugh. I think he knows we’re going to push a button, but he doesn’t care.”
Spade concluded that on “SNL,” “if something totally bombs, it gets a pass. If something totally bombs, then they’re in a lot of trouble.”
Several comedy stars spoke out against Gillis’ joke, including “Schitt’s Creek” star Dan Levy and former “SNL” player Ego Nwodim.
“Women wearing short shorts to the gym doesn’t make them whores. It makes men call them misogynists,” Levy said in an Instagram Reel. “I am speechless that something like this could exist on live national television. And to be completely honest, more men need to stand up against this because it is complacency that has created an environment where women are sexually assaulted and it is a ‘conversation’ as opposed to a ‘crime.’
