Dave Grohl recalls becoming ‘best friends’ with Taylor Hawkins

Dave Grohl remembers the moment he first met Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, knowing they were about to become “best friends.”

The frontman and his drummer enjoyed one of the closest relationships in all of modern rock music, which was tragically cut short when Hawkins died suddenly in March 2022, at the age of 50.

Although Grohl has spoken at length this year about the heartbreak of losing Hawkins, he has now opened up about the positive memory of the beginning of their friendship and how he knew they were destined for greatness together.

Grohl remembered the pivotal moment while appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on October 26, where he and the rest of the Foo Fighters were granted resident status and will perform every night for the rest of the week.

The frontman pointed out that Hawkins did not begin his career with the Foo Fighters, but met them while playing drums for Alanis Morrisette.

“Our first record came out around the time Alanis’s came out,” Grohl said. “So we were doing a bunch of festivals and radio shows and stuff, but that was the first time I met Taylor, backstage.”

He recalls, “Here’s this blond surfer dude going, ‘Yo, man, I love your band. You guys are so awesome. Yadda-yadda-yadda.’ I knew, at that point, I was like, ‘Oh, we’re going to be best friends for the rest of our lives.’

Grohl revealed that it was actually Morrisette who realized the two would be good together, saying she told Hawkins, “What are you going to do when Dave asks you to be the drummer?”

Hawkins played with Morrisette for the duration of her You should know album cycle and left his band in March 1997, after announcing he was joining the Foo Fighters that same month.

Grohl previously opened up about how deeply losing the drummer four years ago affected him, saying Mojo in April “Losing Taylor was never supposed to happen” and “It turned our world upside down and made me question everything about life, it was so unfair. I still struggle to make sense of it.”
