MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KABC) — Authorities in central California on Thursday provided disturbing new details in the case of the infant known as “Baby Angelita,” who was found dead on the side of a road in Monterey County.
Investigators noted it was one of the most emotionally difficult cases they have worked on, involving allegations of sexual abuse of a 14-year-old girl and the death of her newborn.
Authorities say DNA evidence shows little Angelita was born to the teenage victim after she became pregnant by her father, Sergio Galvez Perez.
The father was arrested in Mexico after fleeing with the 14-year-old girl, who was found safe in that country by Mexican authorities.
At a news conference Thursday, investigators revealed how they believe the infant died Aug. 1 in Moss Landing — likely run over by a car driven by the teen mother.
“Just a few feet from baby Angelita was what appeared to be a large bloodstain, which led detectives to believe that baby Angelita had been moved from her place of birth to a location under a vehicle that ultimately ran over her,” Detective Richard Geng of the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said at a news conference.
No evidence of the father’s involvement in the baby’s death has been found, Geng added.
The 14-year-old’s mother was also arrested.
No formal charges have yet been filed in this case.
