Senate Judiciary Democrats Ask President Chuck Grassley apologize to Jack Smith on behalf of his GOP committee members — especially for Sen. Eric Schmittthe Missouri Republican who falsely accused Black-smith of secretly attending an NBA game in Atlanta to conspire with local prosecutors to bring charges against the president Donald Trump.
The letter, led by a high-ranking member Dick Durbin of Illinois and obtained exclusively by POLITICO, also requires Grassley return underlying records Schmitt used at a hearing last month to make the false allegations against Black-smiththe Biden-era special adviser investigating whether Asset sought to overturn the results of the 2020 election and mishandled classified documents.
This episode, the Democrats wrote, “caused unnecessary confusion, slowed the committee’s work, introduced the possibility that false information would be entered unchallenged into the record, and created an embarrassing stain on one of the most important committees in Congress.”
The Democrats’ letter to Republicans marks an escalation of typical bickering between the two parties. It also reopens an unhealed wound for Republicans, whose efforts to harm that of Smith reputation during their high-profile hearing were blunted by by Schmitt error.
