The Detroit Lions made several roster changes Saturday morning, but none were more notable than placing All-Pro linebacker Jack Campbell on injured reserve.
“I have full movement in my lower body and I continue to progress in my upper body movements,” Campbell said. “I know there is still work to do, but I remain very optimistic. I take things one day at a time, stay positive and focus on improving.”
Since then, Lions coach Dan Campbell said Campbell continues to improve.
At this point, it’s unclear what Campbell’s injury means for the remainder of the season or his career, but his placement on injured reserve ensures he will miss the next four games. The first game he could return to is Week 13 against the Atlanta Falcons on December 6.
In Campbell’s place, the Lions are expected to line up Derrick Barnes, Malcolm Rodriguez and Trevor Nowaske at linebacker against the Miami Dolphins. Detroit will also have Joe Bachie, KJ Britt and Amen Ogbongbemiga among their reserves.
To take Campbell’s spot on the 53-man roster, the Lions signed cornerback Nick Whiteside from the practice squad. Whiteside made a big impression during training camp, even earning a few reps with the first-team defense in the first few practices. Now, with top cornerback DJ Reed out this week with a hip injury, Whiteside has the opportunity to be a part of the Lions’ cornerback rotation, which will likely include Roger McCreary, Ennis Rakestraw, Rock Ya-Sin and Khalil Dorsey.
