Donald Trump says war in Iran ‘will end very soon’

US President Donald Trump says the war in Iran “will end very soon” as voters consider their options ahead of midterm elections taking place amid economic uncertainty and ongoing global conflict.

Speaking to reporters Wednesday evening, Trump said: “The war in Iran is going to end very soon. It’s going to end very soon, whenever I want it to end, it’s going to end.” He added that Iran would “never have a nuclear weapon” and that oil prices would “fall like a rock.”

The US president has tried in recent weeks to refocus his attention on Ukraine and suggested that his attacks on Russian refineries were responsible for rising fuel prices. His new message on Iran suggests that the price of everyday goods – and gas by the tank – has an impact on elections.

Voting groups that are key to winning votes in the midterms are increasingly disillusioned with the economy, according to an exclusive Harris poll for the Guardian. Three in four Americans now worry about the risk of recession.

Elsewhere:

  • James Talarico, Texas’ Democratic Senate candidate, was grilled at a town hall by undecided voters on a range of questions ranging from Gaza to his faith. He emphasized his aspiration to put residents above party allegiance.

  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he feels “betrayed” by the United States after Ukraine’s military access to Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite was restricted. The US president denied that the administration had reduced intelligence sharing, but Musk suggested on X that the US government was behind the restrictions.

  • Trump’s new press secretary, Katie Zacharia, is facing scrutiny over her claims that she is a lawyer. Zacharia clarified some questions but the big question remains: has she already passed the bar?

Key events

As for James Talarico, the Democratic candidate vying for a U.S. Senate seat from Texas may not have faced Republican rival Ken Paxton last night, but that doesn’t mean he’s been spared from the attacks.

At a rally in Texas on Wednesday, JP Vance responded to an audience member who shouted his praises by replying, “I love you too, sir.” He then added: “In a completely platonic way, to be clear. I’m the vice president, not James Talarico.”

It’s part of the Republican strategy to cast doubt on Talarico’s Texas credentials and whether he is “man enough,” according to the New York Times.

Recent polls show that the Democratic candidate is in the lead against his Republican counterpart.

Meanwhile, Paxton, who declined an invitation to meet with voters with Talarico last night, has focused his efforts on an advertising blitz. According to CNN, more than $500 million has already been spent on television ads for the Texas race.
