The Red Children’s Covered Market in the Marais district has existed since 1615 and takes its name from the red outfits worn by orphans in a hospital near the market until 1772.

Food & Wine ranked it fifth in the world for street food this year, after other food spots in London, Bangkok, the French city of Lyon and Mexico City.

“The market was completely destroyed” during the night from Sunday to Monday, Lieutenant-Colonel Pierre de Bouvier told journalists on site in the early morning.

“There is nothing left of the covered market,” he said, adding that the metal structure had “partially collapsed” inside.

The mayor of the Central Paris region, Ariel Weil, said he was relieved that the fire was under control and would not spread further.

“The worst has been avoided,” he said. “No neighboring buildings were affected.”
