DELLONA, Wis. — Six people died in a plane crash just southwest of Lake Delton Tuesday evening, the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office said.

The victims were five adults and a child. They were flying a Piper PA 46 with a round trip from Kenosha to Menomonie. The plane was in contact with a nearby air control tower before the crash.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, preliminary information indicated the plane was flying at 24,000 feet when the pilot reported icing and requested to descend.

As air traffic control approved the descent, the aircraft began a descending turn to the right at an increasing rate. Communication and data tracking were then lost.

Investigators will begin documenting the scene and examining the plane as part of their protocol. The plane will be recovered at a secure facility for further evaluation, according to officials.

NTSB investigations involve research into the pilot, aircraft, and operational environment, which includes:

  • Flight path data
  • Pilot license and qualifications, as well as recency of flight experience
  • Witness statements
  • Aircraft maintenance records
  • Video surveillance
  • Weather conditions at the time of the accident
  • Recording of air traffic control communications

Any witnesses and those with surveillance video are asked to contact the NTSB at witness@ntsb.gov.

According to the NTSB, local authorities will release the ages and identities of the victims.

A preliminary report should be available within 30 days.

The Sheriff’s Office notified the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the NTSB of the accident. These agencies will assist in the investigation.

The NTSB confirmed to News 3 Now that there was icing at the time of the crash.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
