Former University of Hawaii football coach June Jones dies

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Former University of Hawaii head football coach June Jones died at the age of 73, according to multiple sources Thursday.

June Jones was the winningest coach in the modern era of Hawaiian soccer with 76 wins in nine seasons from 1999 to 2007. He then went to work at Southern Methodist University from 2008 until resigning in 2014.

He led UH to six bowl games and coached three 10-plus win seasons, including an undefeated 12-0 regular season and a trip to the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2007. His 1999 team recorded the greatest turnaround in NCAA history with a 9-4 record and a share of the Western Athletic Conference title, earning him national coach of the year honors.

His teams won two WAC titles (1999 and 2007) and his Run-and-Shoot offense produced record-setting quarterbacks, including Heisman Trophy finalist Colt Brennan.

He has coached five All-Americans, 52 all-conference players and 16 NFL draft picks. A UH quarterback from 1973 to 1974, he also began his coaching career in Hawai’i as a graduate assistant in 1983.

Jones agreed to become Kapolei High School’s next offensive coordinator in 2016.

He was most recently the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Sea Dragons.

He coached for three years in the National Football League (NFL). Jones played professionally as a quarterback in the NFL and CFL. He played football with the Oregon Ducks, Rainbow Warriors and Portland State Vikings.
