Joe it’s gone.
Paramount’s next G.I. Joe The film has a release date set for October 20, 2028, the studio announced Friday. Danny McBride is directing the film and writing the screenplay with Jeff Fradley and John Carcieri.
Bradley Cooper stars in the project as Duke, with the film described as a reimagining of the franchise. Joe has been popular for decades as a toy brand and through 1980s cartoons, but never found its way onto the big screen. Hope is this version of McBride, known for his singular voice on shows like Eastbound and down And Fair Gemstones as well as the recent Halloween movies, can do the trick.
The most recent entry was Snake-eyeswhich failed amid the 2021 pandemic recovery with just $40 million, and also includes GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra (2009) and GI Joe: retaliation (2013) – both moderate money makers but critical duds.
Long lasting G.I. Joe producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing with Mark Vahradian and Zev Foreman for Hasbro Entertainment, which has a number of films and TV shows in the works with notable talent including Craig Mazin on the Baldur’s Gate 3 television show and Tony filmmaker Matt Johnson on the Magic: The Gathering movie. The strategy is to choose creatives who can bring a fresh look to the material and elevate it, with Hasbro willing to wait for the right talent rather than rushing to complete projects.
In other release date changes, Paramount has shifted its next Paranormal activity restart several months back to next year’s Halloween season. It will open October 22, 2027 (returning May 21, 2027).
It comes from director Ian Tuason, who broke out with independent cinema Low voicewhich grossed $21 million worldwide on a budget of $500,000. Chase Yi, Sonia Mena and Maya Da Costa star in the feature, which counts Blumhouse Atomic’s James Wan and Jason Blum as producers.
