The Modesto Police Department said the two girls were struck by a vehicle Friday evening near Thomas Downey High School.

A girl is dead and another is seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle Friday evening in Modesto, police say.
The Modesto Police Department said the crash happened as the girls were crossing the street in a crosswalk in the 1100 block of Coffee Road. Officers responded just before 9 p.m. from nearby Thomas Downey High School and began CPR until medical personnel arrived.
Both were transported to local hospitals and one later died from his injuries, police said. The other remains in critical condition.
The investigation into the crash is still ongoing, although police said there were no signs of impairment.
The crash resulted in road closures on Coffee Road at East Fairmont Avenue and Brighton Avenue.
