Google Maps update makes app fully compatible with iPhone Duo

The iPhone Duo has been available for a while now, but many iOS applications have still not been adapted to its two screens. Google Maps is no longer a part of it, as version 26.44.4 of the app would now add full device support.

While Google’s App Store release notes only mention “bug fixes,” if you’re already using Google Maps on the iPhone Duo, you’ll notice the difference right away. Previously, the app was shifted slightly to the left on the outer screen to make room for the new position of the iOS dock. On the inner screen you have the standard iPhone app, which can be moved left or right but leaves most of the screen blank.

Now Google Maps fills both screens. It doesn’t change much on the exterior, although it looks neater. Inside, the app now has a wide layout, with the menus and search box on the left and the map or satellite view stretching from corner to corner. It’s a lot like Google Maps on the iPad.

Street View also benefits from the extra width. By default, it occupies the left side of the inner screen and leaves the right side for the map. There’s apparently no way to swap the two, but you can make Street View fill the entire screen. If you close the iPhone Duo in Street View, it switches to the outer screen and a close button takes you back to the map.
