The satellite equipped with a Google AI chip has generated its first response from space. In a blog post published Friday, Google claims to have successfully started the satellite’s tensor processing units (TPUs), allowing the onboard Gemma 4 model to act on a prompt to create a haiku about being in space:

Google says it has also tried other space-themed limericks and telemetry prompts. The test is part of Google’s Project Suncatcher, an experimental initiative that could eventually install AI data centers in space. Google put the satellite into orbit earlier this month.
“Next, we will continue a series of tests to evaluate the performance of TPUs under thermal stress and radiation exposure in orbit,” explains Google. “Verifying the ability of our TPUs to reliably run workloads in space paves the way for our next milestone of interconnected twin satellites in 2027.”
