(WXII) – One in eight women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime.
Julia Gay hopes her story will raise awareness for early detection.
Gay was at home when she received a call from the Greensboro Breast Cancer Center, telling her that a biopsy from a routine mammogram revealed she had cancer.
She was shocked; there is no history of breast cancer in her family and she had no symptoms.
“I remember thinking, ‘Julia, you’ve believed your whole life that God never allows anything in your life that doesn’t have a plan or purpose, and this is no exception.'”
Gay began to enter a new chapter in his life. One that was rooted in acceptance, courage, and healing.
The center helped her put together a care team, including a surgeon and an oncologist.
“With advanced breast cancer research and technology, they were able to detect it early,” she said. “If I hadn’t gone in, my story could have been totally different.”
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Across the Triad and beyond, walks to raise awareness and funds for a cure are being held.
Join survivors and their supporters on October 24 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park to make progress against breast cancer.
