DETROIT — When Abdul El-Sayed, Michigan’s newly elected senator, took the microphone at his victory party, he praised Allah.
He introduced himself by his full Arabic name, Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed, which he had joked about during the election campaign contained “sounds that come out of parts of people’s throats that they don’t know they have.”
