LOS ANGELES — Yes Nithya Raman wins the Los Angeles mayoral race next month, she will face another challenge: convincing everyone on the city council to work with her.
From Raman last minute entry into the race against Karen Bass in February, council members flocked to progressives aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America. Not one of Raman 14 colleagues supported her, and the fire against her intensified as she rose in the polls.
“Nithya and I vote together 99 percent of the time,” City Council Speaker Marqueece Harris-Dawson told POLITICO. “And I actively oppose her being mayor. Because I understand what it means to work with her and I understand how much more difficult it will make it for the city.
The conflict could have considerable consequences, if Raman is victorious, shaping Los Angeles at a critical time. The 2028 Summer Olympics would take place halfway through his term, and alongside Zohran Mamdani in New York, Raman The mayoralty would become another closely watched test of a DSA-backed politician’s ability to lead one of America’s largest cities.
