Fresh off a $25 billion judgment against Meta for misleading the public about its privacy protections, New Mexico’s attorney general Raul Torrez lets artificial intelligence and Silicon Valley know that they could be next.
Torrez (D) took a gamble by choosing not to join a $17 Billion Multi-State Settlement with Meta in August. But this decision paid off with a record ruling against the company on Wednesday.
The case relied on consumer protection laws to argue that Meta misled users about its privacy controls, a tactic states already use. against AI developers.
“Everyone who works in artificial intelligence, everyone who builds products they can’t control, everyone who makes representations to the market about what a product does or doesn’t do, or how it uses or doesn’t use specific types of consumer data, we’re going to monitor them and we’re ready to do it again.” Torrez said in an interview. “The message should be received in Silicon Valley: this is not the end, it’s just the beginning.”
