The Giants benched Jameis Winston just 23 days after trading to the Vikings for JJ McCarthy. McCarthy will become the third quarterback to start for the Giants, joining Jaxson Dart and Winston.
Dart tore the MCL and meniscus in his left knee in Week 2, ending his season.
Winston has started the last four games with a 2-1-1 record.
He was just 14 of 26 for 152 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions Sunday, leaving the Giants trailing 34-10 in the fourth quarter. McCarthy rallied the team, going 11 of 21 for 243 yards, a touchdown and an interception and gave the Giants a chance to mount a miracle comeback.
This is why Winston agrees to return to a backup role.
“Last match, it wasn’t what he was capable of to be,” Winston said, via an SNY Giants video. “Every week, you’re defined by the last time you stepped on the field. So I think based on the last game, my job is to lead the New York Giants to victory, and that didn’t happen. That being said, I understand where I am now.
Winston has spent most of the last seven seasons as a backup, so he is familiar with that role.
“Just focus on one day at a time,” Winston said. “I’m extremely grateful to still be able to do what I love, which is play football at a high level for the New York Football Giants. Being able to accept roles and understand like, ‘What is your important role? How can I be the best in my role on this team?’ That’s one of the things you have to adapt to in this league.
