Jared Kushner’s European security plan does not convince Europe – POLITICO

The latest U.S. proposal underscores growing concern over Trump’s new rapprochement with Russia, as he steps up pressure on Ukraine and his administration tries to revive long-stalled talks to end Moscow’s full-scale war against kyiv.

POLITICO spoke with 12 NATO diplomats, EU envoys and representatives of European governments, all of whom were granted anonymity to speak freely on this sensitive issue. NATO allies were not informed in advance of U.S. plans, according to three alliance diplomats, and many remain skeptical of the idea.

US President Donald Trump spoke of a “big, beautiful deal” on Thursday evening after meeting with Putin’s envoy Kirill Dmitriev, adding: “It will involve more than just Ukraine, and I might even say it could involve all of Europe.” »

“Our goal is to develop practical arrangements that address the security concerns of all parties, reduce the risk of future conflict, and create a more stable and predictable security environment,” Trump’s son-in-law and envoy Jared Kushner added shortly after.

Kushner said the deal would have five goals: “permanent security consultations, reliable crisis communications, greater military transparency, reciprocal measures to reduce escalation risks, and a sustainable framework for long-term European security and stability.”

“What Kushner meant is a bit unclear,” said a NATO diplomat. “The general feeling in Europe is that any current discussions with Russia on future architecture will simply be used by Moscow to legitimize its arguments… and will not be accepted by European allies.”
