Cleveland Browns tight end Jared Verse objected to his teammates’ reaction after he was thrown onto the field during a 27-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
During a point-after attempt, Steelers guard Mason McCormick placed Verse in the air and forcefully pushed him down. Verse not only described this as “dirty shit,” but also said he expected his teammates to come to his defense:
Steelers safety Jaquan Brisker told reporters after the game that the two-time Pro Bowler “should have kept his mouth shut” after he spouted trash talk when the Browns beat Pittsburgh earlier this year.
Verse said that’s just his nature, and he thinks he performs best when there’s a “personal” advantage:
In a rivalry game like this, neither team needs any extra motivation. Verse still provided some when he suggested the Browns were going to “make Pittsburgh ours on Sunday.”
That obviously didn’t happen, and the Steelers offensive line kept Verse in check. He was limited to one total tackle.
Browns coach Todd Monken didn’t call out any specific players, but made some pointed comments afterward.
“We weren’t very calm and we didn’t keep our cool,” he told reporters on Monday. “And you are the way you play, not the way you talk. And that was the message all week. That will continue to be our message every week. And that’s ‘speak with your game.'” I’ll leave it at that.
Verse is in his first year with Cleveland after joining the Myles Garrett trade. He remains without a sack for eight games.
