Jenna Bush Hager slammed Al Roker for nicknamed her “Big Red.”
“Earlier this week when I was wearing red… remember that? And I walked on set and Al said, ‘Hey, Big Red!'” Bush Hager said on Thursday’s “Today with Jenna & Sheinelle,” referring to Tuesday’s episode of the “Today” show.
“And all the girls were like, ‘No, no! Don’t say that!'” Sheinelle Jones confirmed, mimicking the co-host’s reactions.
Bush Hager insisted on the impromptu nickname: “You can’t call someone, a woman, ‘tall!’ » »
Jones, meanwhile, said Roker should have said “Skinny Red!” instead.
Jones recalled that “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie said, “Oh my God, I can’t believe you said that,” after which Roker asked Jones, “What did I do?”
“And I said, ‘You can’t say anything that takes up space!'” Jones said.
Roker “invented all these other things” to defuse the situation, including “Tall Red,” but Bush Hager did not.
“I’m like, ‘No deal!’ “, she exclaimed.
Although the show host joked about the nickname on Thursday’s episode, she previously revealed that she struggles with body image issues.
Bush Hager — who shares children Mila, 13, Poppy, 11, and Hal, 7, with husband Henry Hager — once said she’s been dealing with these feelings since she was 9 years old.
“I don’t think that way anymore and I haven’t for a while,” she said in 2023.
“I think having kids and your body changing in that way is a really good reset that allows you to realize, ‘Wow, I’ve done this amazing thing, and my body is so much more than a vessel to be made fun of, to be worried about.’”
She added: “I found a diary over Christmas break where in fourth grade my New Year’s resolution was to lose 5 pounds – my daughter, my oldest is now in fourth grade and she looks so young.”
