Jimmy Kimmel became the first late-night host to present the results of the 2026 midterm elections on Tuesday night.
Although none of the major late-night shows aired on election night, ABC Jimmy Kimmel Live! was reportedly recorded later than usual on Tuesday evening to respond to some of the early feedback. Comedy Central’s The daily show was the only other major late-night show to air a new episode Tuesday night, but this one was taped before many polls closed. Stephen Colbert regularly took his Late show live on election nights, but, of course, CBS canceled his show last year and it ended in May.
Kimmel’s late recording allowed the host to make a few jokes at the start of an evening in which Democrats are expected to win both the House and Senate amid historic, surprise victories in Georgia, Texas, Ohio, South Carolina and Kansas.
And Kimmel had plenty of barbs ready to throw at President Donald Trump, with whom he has long feuded.
At the start of his monologue, he focused on Trump’s recent obsession with complimenting people’s butts.
“It seems like after all the talk about Nicki Minaj’s ass, Jon Husted’s ass, the only ass Trump is concerned about tonight is the one that was just handed to him.”
Kimmel even revived the false 2024 rumor that Vice President JD Vance once had sex with a couch.
“The Democrats have won so many seats that JD Vance can’t even find one to sleep with,” Kimmel said.
Returning to Trump, Kimmel joked that he spent the day watching Fox News’ coverage of the results “to try to give himself an insurrection.”
“Word coming from inside the White House is that he’s already running out of containers of dipping sauce to throw at the TV,” Kimmel joked. “Man, oh man, would I hate to be the Door Dash driver who delivers Trump his Papa John’s tonight?”
Kimmel then recapped where some key races were at the time of his show’s taping and paid tribute to outgoing House Speaker Mike Johnson with a compilation of some of his funniest moments.
