Jon Rahm relinquishes remainder of $300M LIV golf deal as part of separation deal

It appears Jon Rahm was willing to do anything to get out of his LIV Golf contract, even if it meant leaving a huge amount of money on the table.

According to ESPN’s Mark Schlabach, as part of Rahm’s separation agreement with LIV Golf for the return of its exclusive rights to his name, image and likeness, the 31-year-old relinquished the remainder of his $300 million contract. Schlabach noted that “Rahm is believed to be owed more than $100 million on the remainder of his contract,” which he signed in December 2023 after leaving the PGA Tour to join LIV Golf.

According to Schlabach, court records showed Rahm was LIV Golf’s largest unsecured creditor, and he “owed $7.5 million when the league voluntarily filed for Chapter 11 protection on September 8.” A month later, it appears that he was owed much more.

During his three-year tenure at LIV Golf, from 2024 to 2026, Rahm made nearly $107 million in on-course revenue. He was the individual season champion in all three years in the breakaway league.

Despite his success while participating in LIV Golf, Rahm’s attorney John Beck informed Judge Michael B. Kaplan of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New Jersey on October 7 that his client would not join LIV Golf 2.0.

“Mr. Rahm has independently reviewed the proposed terms of LIV 2.0 and has determined that those terms are unacceptable to him and that he will no longer participate in LIV 2.0,” Beck said at the time.

Kaplan is expected to approve Rahm’s separation agreement from LIV Golf on November 5. The two-time major champion is scheduled to compete at the Abu Dhabi Championship from November 5-8, the penultimate event of the DP World Tour season. Schlabach noted that it is “unclear how quickly Rahm will be allowed to return to the PGA Tour if that is what he desires.”
