Judge blocks Trump arch after panel approves construction

A federal judge Thursday blocked the Asset administration of the dedication of a massive triumphal arch that President Donald Trump says will be built at the foot of Arlington National Cemetery.

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan issueda two-week restraining order Thursday evening, banning all construction activity related to the arch while litigation is pending.

The arch, which won approval earlier in the day from the National Capital Planning Association — a committee made up of the president’s allies — has drawn fierce opposition from local officials, preservation organizations and a group of veterans who visit the cemetery to honor their fallen friends. Chutkan concluded that the damage facing Washington and Virginia – from years of traffic disruptions to the economic damage caused by the massive construction zone – warranted an immediate halt.

Chutkan signaled last week that she was skeptical of the administration’s rush to begin construction while litigation was pending. According to her, Chutkan She also stressed that she does not accept the administration’s latest attempt to turn the arch into a military complex.
