Kai Trump’s golf season at the University of Miami hit a major obstacle, as she announced Wednesday that she had undergone surgery to repair a wrist injury.
President Donald Trump’s granddaughter, 19, shared the news on Instagram, alongside a selfie of herself lying on a hospital bed showing her arm in a cast.
“Although I had hoped to avoid surgery, after speaking with my family, coaches and athletic training staff, I know I made the best decision for my long-term health and my future in the game I love,” Trump wrote in a statement, explaining that she was injured during her first tournament of the season.
“This is certainly not how I envisioned the next few months, but sometimes the journey takes an unexpected turn, and I choose to accept this one with patience and a lot of determination,” she continues.
While saying her recovery “will take time,” she thanked the “amazing people” around her for their support, including her coaches, family and teammates.
“Having the right people on your side makes all the difference, and I couldn’t be more grateful,” Trump wrote.
She also paid special tribute to Dr. Michelle Carlson, a hand surgeon at Manhattan Hospital for Special Surgery.
“For now, it’s about healing and trusting the process. I can’t wait to be back with my team, doing what I love. I’ll be back before you know it, stronger and more grateful than ever!” concluded the vlogger.
In August, Trump arrived on campus to begin her freshman year at the Miami school, located just under two hours from her family’s home in Jupiter, Florida.
Her recent surgery comes after she injured her wrist while competing in the Golfweek Fall Challenge in September.
She then shared the news of her injury with her followers on Instagram.
“Let’s just say there must have been a cart path under that ground because it was very hard. Hitting it felt like a shock to my arm,” Trump said.
“Then on the 10th hole I hit my driver and it felt like I was tearing it again,” she said.
She said doctors found a “small sliver” of damage along her ligaments and she was receiving stem cell treatments from pain management specialist Dr. Jeffrey Weigers.
Trump appears to have had a rough few months, as she expressed her displeasure with saying goodbye to her family before leaving for college.
This included her mother, Vanessa Trump, who was previously married to Donald Trump Jr. and was diagnosed with breast cancer this year.
At the 2026 ESPY Awards, Trump gave an update on his mother’s health to Page Six, sharing that she was “doing better” as she entered the second phase of her treatment.
