Kelly Clarkson says New York store thought she couldn’t afford equipment

Kelly Clarkson would have had his Pretty woman moment – a “huge”, in fact.

“I just drove to Brooklyn to check out this store that I thought was really awesome and had a few things in mind to buy,” Clarkson, 44, wrote via X on Saturday, October 10, alleging that she was “looked at as if (she) couldn’t afford it.”

The singer further claimed that an unidentified merchant instead promised to “find something comparable” to her wish list, allegedly insinuating that the singer did not have the funds to purchase the items.

“Wow, man,” Clarkson tweeted. “You’re an idiot and you just lost a huge sale.”

Clarkson claimed she had been shopping at Art of Play, a home goods store specializing in puzzles, games and other toys. The local Brooklyn, New York boutique has not publicly responded to Clarkson’s accusations. We asked for comments.

“You should all go see Art of Play in Brooklyn if you like being treated like Julia Roberts‘ character in Pretty woman” Clarkson concluded on Saturday. “Sure, check it out (thumbs down emoji).”

In the 1990s Pretty woman, Roberts, 58, plays an escort named Vivian Ward hired by a wealthy businessman (Richard Geré) for a week. Looking to purchase appropriate clothing to attend her client’s work duties, Vivian walks into a chic boutique in Beverly Hills. The saleswoman, glancing at her midriff-baring mini-dress, immediately asks her to leave assuming she cannot afford the store’s expensive merchandise.

Finding success in a different venue, Roberts’ Vivian later – and iconically – returned to the first store the next day and called out their behavior.

“Hi, do you remember me? I was here yesterday (and) you weren’t expecting me,” she retorted. “You work on commission, right? Big mistake. Big. Huge. I have to go shopping now!”

Clarkson, who hasn’t spoken further about her shopping excursion, moved to New York in 2023 with her two children: River Rose, 12, and Remington, 10. (Clarkson shared her children with her late ex-husband, Brandon Blackstockdied in 2025 after a private battle with cancer.)

“It’s a great place to raise kids because I haven’t really been exposed to different cultures,” Clarkson said. on the “La Culturistas” podcast last month of his family moving. “I haven’t really been exposed to anything like that. I love where I grew up…but I just wanted to say it’s a cool thing for them to have all the colors of the rainbow, all the personality colors, everything.”

THE Voice The coach further noted that his kids have been “really good” lately following the death of their father.

“We have fun, we cook, we play games,” she added at the time. “I’m there at the (school) pick-up or I’m there at the drop-off. It’s really different.”
