Kyle Shanahan: Nothing changed for me with Brandon Aiyuk, I evolved mentally

When 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked in September if the team’s injury issues at wide receiver led him to consider bringing back Brandon Aiyuk, his answer was a resounding no.

Aiyuk started the reintegration process from the team’s reserve/left list and part of that process would involve him reporting to the team’s facilities later this week if he hasn’t been released in advance. Shanahan was asked at a news conference Wednesday about his expectations for such a visit.

“None. I have no expectations,” Shanahan said. “I’ve kind of evolved mentally and done a little bit like I talked to you about two months ago. Nothing’s really changed for me.”

Shanahan said he hasn’t had any conversations about a roster waiver that would give the 49ers more time to explore a trade, which joins his release or return to the active roster as the team’s options once he’s off the team’s roster left. Shanahan said there were “no absolutes” when asked if he could envision a scenario in which Aiyuk plays for the team again, but his other answers sent a strong message that Aiyuk will move on once the administrative work is completed.
