Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was placed on injured reserve Saturday after being diagnosed with blood clots, but he is expected to eventually be able to return to football activities in the future, his agent confirmed Monday, although ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Hurts will miss the remainder of this season:
Schefter and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network previously reported that injured reserve was not in the initial plans.
“The team, according to sources, has not even discussed the possibility of an IR, which would keep him from playing for at least four weeks,” according to Schefter and Rapoport. “In general, the minimum time for a moderate dose of blood thinners is six weeks, according to sources.”
However, after consulting doctors, this decision changed.
The Eagles released a statement on the situation on Thursday:
“On Thursday, October 8, Jalen went to the training room after practice to seek treatment for his calf. He informed the medical staff that he had been injured during the Rams game on October 4.
“Out of an abundance of caution, an ultrasound was performed Saturday after the team flew to London and visited. The ultrasound revealed a superficial blood clot. Our medical team and doctors in London reviewed the results and concluded that activity and mobility were significant and that Jalen was safe to play. Doctors recommended a follow-up ultrasound within 72 hours of the game and flight back to Philadelphia.
“Jalen played without limitations in Sunday’s game, received treatment Monday and Tuesday and practiced fully on Wednesday, as reflected in the training report. Throughout our time in London and this week, we have remained in communication with the league office on this matter.
“Wednesday evening, a follow-up ultrasound revealed movement in the small blood clot. Jalen will be out for Sunday’s game against the Panthers as we determine the appropriate treatment. His health and safety are our highest priority.”
Hurts had previously dealt with a calf injury he suffered in a Week 4 game with the Los Angeles Rams, but was able to overcome it during Philadelphia’s loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 5.
Availability hasn’t been a major issue for Hurts throughout his career, as he appeared in 48 of a possible 51 games from 2023-25.
This season, the 28-year-old has completed 57.8 percent of his passes for 933 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions in five games.
Hurts also continued to make plays with his legs, totaling 107 yards and a touchdown.
Philadelphia (3-3) is looking to clinch its sixth straight playoff appearance and third straight division crown. After winning a Super Bowl title during the 2024 season, the Eagles suffered a disappointing elimination in the Wild Card round last year.
With Hurts out, backup passer Tanner McKee replaced the Eagles in Sunday’s loss to the Carolina Panthers.
