Lea Michele, who became a global celebrity as Rachel Berry in Joy, is in talks to reprise the role in the upcoming Disney+/Hulu reboot, sources confirmed to Deadline.
The news comes a day after the order for the reboot series was revealed.
Co-creator Ryan Murphy said last month that he had been in contact with “about 10 of the original cast members” of the series, although no casting has been announced as part of the series order.
In addition to Michele, the original Joy the cast included Chris Colfer, Jane Lynch, Kevin McHale and Matthew Morrison as well as Dianna Agron, Cory Monteith, Amber Riley, Mark Salling, Naya Rivera and Darren Criss.
Morrison is not yet in talks to appear in the reboot, sources told Deadline. We understand that the actor hopes to be part of the project.
Set at William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio, Glee followed the members of New Directions, a glee club competing on the show choir circuit, as they dealt with social issues. Each episode featured a musical performance.
Michele’s Rachel Berry character was an ambitious, highly talented, hyper-focused diva from Lima, Ohio, with ties to Broadway. Driven by a lifelong dream of becoming a celebrity, she was known for her powerful voice and drive, but often alienated her peers with her ego.
The reboot comes from the original show’s producer 20th Television.
The original Joy, which won six Emmy Awards, including for Murphy and Lynch as well as guest stars such as Neil Patrick Harris and Gwyneth Paltrow, currently streaming on Hulu.
Michele recently completed her starring role as Florence Vassy in the Broadway revival of Chess. She was recently seen in a guest role on CBS’ Elsbeth.
