Mamdani’s team ‘pissed off’ by Darializa Avila Chevalier’s calls for Tisch to be canned

A sickle in the back!

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s allies are publicly breaking with him over his hand-picked police commissioner — and Hizzoner is furious that the socialist House candidate he took risks to support is leading the charge.

City Hall staff are openly complaining about their alleged ally, Darializa Avila Chevalier — whom Mamdani supported just months ago in the primaries — after she led a crusade to criticize New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch after ICE agents shot and killed an illegal migrant in the Bronx.

“They were upset by what she had done on social media and by her public rhetoric about the NYPD,” one informed source said. “City Hall asked me, ‘What the hell are you doing! » »

The ICE shooting could mark the end of the socialist honeymoon for some Mamdani supporters, as some left-wing Poles and the national branch of his fellow Democratic Socialists of America push for Tisch’s ouster despite Hizzoner’s support for his commissioner.

Another source said members of the administration complained that “this constituted a direct attack on Mamdani.”

The DSA’s dysfunction became public last Friday when Chevalier tweeted angrily about immigration agents who shot a suspected gang member as he fled arrest in a car. Mamdani’s alleged ally accused Tisch and the New York Police Department of violating Big Apple sanctuary city laws that prohibit officers from assisting ICE.

“Last night, the NYPD and Commissioner Tisch violated the spirit, if not the letter, of our sanctuary city policies and fueled the Trump Administration’s attempt to demonize our communities,” she wrote in her nearly 400-word tirade.

“The NYPD Strategic Response Group must be disbanded as quickly as possible and Commissioner Tisch must resign,” she continued.

The NYPD did not assist ICE in arresting the immigrants, nor did the SRG respond to the protest.

City Hall was also upset that Chevalier was encouraging anti-ICE protests, fearing that any sign of disorder could give the Trump administration reason to flood the streets, sources said.

The congressional candidate also said she was pushed during an aggressive protest in Marble Hill on Thursday evening after a video filmed her confronting a calm police supervisor, accusing him of escalating the situation.

“She’s throwing her own fireball rhetoric to rally people,” a source said, adding, “But inciting doesn’t help.”

But calls from his fellow far-left democratic socialist sparked a media firestorm against Mamdani, who nominated Tisch – a Zionist Jew, despite his and his party’s open criticism of Israel – and promised to disband the SSR during the campaign.

Hizzoner, who has avoided the city press for days, has been inundated with demands from his fellow socialists and the DSA national chapter to get rid of the police commissioner and fulfill his campaign promise to disband the specialized police unit.

Joining the call after Chevalier was DSA member and state Senate candidate Illapa Sairitupac, who was also endorsed by the mayor.

“Abolish ICE, dissolve SSR, fire Tisch,” he wrote.

New York’s DSA chapter, whose leaders are close friends of the mayor, took a softer tone, saying Tisch should be fired if she can’t take on ICE.

“Jessica Tisch must get ICE out of New York and end the NYPD’s complicity with these terrorists,” the group wrote on social media. “If the commissioner fails to put an end to these injustices, she must be fired.”

Neither of the two other House candidates backed by Mamdani, Brad Lander and Claire Valdez, have made similar calls.

But insiders told the Post that Chevalier has no plans to let go.

The bombastic future member of the House of Representatives and her team are working on a speech — potentially on or before election night — to call for Tisch’s firing.

Sources said the young mayor was convinced to support Chevalier by his adviser, Morris Katz, but was not a fan of her.

For her part, Chevalier is distancing herself from the mayor, even though most credit his support and campaign for helping her win New York’s 13th congressional primary, knocking out incumbent Democrat Adriano Espaillat in June.

The 13th CD is overwhelmingly blue, and winning the Democratic line virtually guarantees Chevalier’s victory in next month’s general election.

Campaign investigators are now under strict instructions not to say anything about the mayor, according to sources.

“I can’t speak about the mayor, but I can tell you what Darializa’s priorities are,” the volunteers are expected to say, according to a person informed.

Sources said the impulsive Chevalier had been on City Hall and Mamdani’s radar as a potential liability for some time, but they didn’t think she would be a problem so soon.

“They are not naive about the nature of their problems – (Council Speaker Julie) Menin, the Republicans, etc., and she is on target,” the source said.

“She’s a coward,” they continued, “they’re sick of her, and she hasn’t even started getting into Congress.”
