Man shot by ICE agent in New York’s Marble Hill, DHS says

A man was hospitalized after being shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in New York’s Marble Hill neighborhood on Thursday, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

The shooting happened around 4 p.m. local time near West 225th Street and Marble Hill Avenue.

Authorities said he was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The New York Police Department was not involved in the shooting, the department said.

Video from the scene shows numerous law enforcement personnel present. A gray vehicle with a bullet hole in the windshield was visible in the middle of the road.

Two law enforcement sources told CBS News that preliminary information indicated ICE agents were attempting to arrest someone when another man, who was not the target of the arrest, was shot.

DHS, ICE’s parent agency, said agents were conducting a targeted enforcement operation to arrest a man from the Dominican Republic who they said was living in the United States illegally.

DHS said an ICE officer discharged his weapon during the incident, injuring the man.

“ICE agents immediately rendered assistance. The individual is alive and is at a local hospital. The FBI and HSI are on scene. The incident remains under investigation. More information will be shared as it becomes available,” DHS said.

DHS alleged that the injured man had ties to the Trinitarios gang, had previous arrests for assault and criminal convictions for robbery, grand larceny, drug possession and weapons possession. According to DHS, he was arrested by the New York Police Department in December 2023, but was released a few days later.

In a social media post, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said that based on “initial reports” there was a 5-year-old child in a car with the victim when “multiple bullets” were fired. Mamdani said the child was not injured.

The mayor added that he called President Trump to “demand that he end all ICE enforcement in our city.”

An FBI official said its evidence response team was responding to the scene to assist DHS investigators.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she had been informed of the shooting.

“We expect federal authorities to provide a full and transparent account of the circumstances surrounding this incident,” Hochul wrote on social media. “New Yorkers deserve to know exactly what happened and why.”

“I am deeply concerned by reports of a shooting involving ICE agents in Marble Hill this afternoon. Federal authorities must promptly provide us with a fully transparent account of what happened. I recognize the immense fear that ICE’s actions have caused among immigrant New Yorkers, and I am deeply concerned about the additional anxiety and uncertainty this incident may bring to our city’s communities as we await answers,” the City Council Speaker posted. from New York, Julie Menin, on social networks.

Authorities are continuing their investigation.

There were at least 30 shootings involving DHS agents during the second Trump administration, according to a CBS News analysis, some of which turned deadly.
