Martha Stewart is responding to backlash over a since-deleted photo of her Halloween costume, where she appears to depict a homeless person.
In the photo posted to Instagram before it was quickly deleted, TMZ reported that the lifestyle guru and media mogul was seen in torn clothing with dirt on his face. She was also holding a clipboard with a message saying “I’M HUNGRY, HELP ME!!”
In a statement to PeopleStewart said she was “distressed” that her Halloween costume offended people, as she intended to raise awareness about homelessness.
“I have spent decades teaching others how to celebrate Halloween – sharing fun and festive recipes, providing unique craft ideas, and providing tips on entertaining and events to make the most of one of my favorite holidays of the year,” she said. “I’m sorry that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was intended to raise awareness about the very serious issue of homelessness, offended people, which was never my intention.
“Homelessness continues to remain one of America’s greatest current challenges and crises, something that I care deeply about and have devoted much time and effort to supporting charities combating this current social epidemic,” Stewart continued. “I am committed to continuing to make a difference.”
The Hollywood Reporter also reached out to Stewart’s rep for comment.
TMZ reported that the photo was included in an Instagram carousel promoting the candles she sells on QVC. “My QVC candles are perfect for Halloween!!” » read the caption of the message.
After screenshots of the photo began circulating on social media, people were quick to voice their criticism. “Martha Stewart absolutely looks tone deaf and totally out of touch. Absolutely disgraceful,” one person wrote on X. Another person said: “Making fun of homeless people is neither acceptable nor funny.”
