Martin Scorsese says Cleopatra and Angelina Jolie were ruined by Sony hacking

Martin Scorsese’s “Cleopatra” movie never came to fruition, and he claims the Angelina Jolie starrer was rejected because of Seth Rogen and the Sony hack.

For those who need a refresher, Sony’s emails were hacked in November 2014 by a group who hoped that the Seth Rogen comedy “The Interview,” which dealt with a fictional assassination attempt on North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, would not be released by Sony.

According to Scorsese, this caused aftereffects in the industry, which he depicted in the first episode of the Tribeca original series “Crafty.”

“We were going to do Cleopatra at one point, and then they made fun of (Kim Jong Un), and he got angry and blew up everyone at Columbia,” Scorsese said. “Seth Rogen, right? And then he got angry and (it) ruined Cleopatra.”

Although Rogen was not directly responsible for the project’s cancellation, the resulting hack exposed thousands of emails, including those from producer Scott Rudin to Sony’s Amy Pascal, calling Jolie a “spoiled brat with minimal talent.”

“We were going to do it,” Scorsese also said. “Angelina Jolie. We were going. She was going to be Cleopatra VII. It was going to be really wild.”

The film was to be written by screenwriter Eric Roth, who wrote Scorsese’s 2023 film “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
